La galerie est heureuse de présenter A Night In / A Day Out, la seconde exposition personnelle en ses murs de l’artiste suédoise Heidi Ukkonen, qui vit et travaille à Anvers en Belgique. Avec une série inédite d’une dizaine de peintures, elle explore la banalité du quotidien en la transformant en un théâtre d’émotions contrastées, où l’ordinaire flirte avec l’extraordinaire.
Dans ses nouvelles œuvres, Heidi Ukkonen met en scène des fragments de vie domestique – cuisine, salon, chambre, jardin – où personnages et objets semblent en suspens, comme pris dans un entre-deux temporel. L’ennui y côtoie la joie pure, l’absurde se mêle à la douceur, créant une atmosphère à la fois familière et intrigante. Derrière ces images teintées d’humour et de légèreté se cache une tension sous-jacente: et s’il n’y avait pas de lendemain? A Night In / A Day Out questionne cette oscillation entre routine et imprévu, entre immobilité et urgence de vivre. Chaque scène devient une invitation à savourer l’instant présent, à capter la beauté cachée du quotidien, comme un écho à Carpe Diem : profiter de ce qui est là, avant qu’il ne s’efface.
Originaire de Suède, Heidi Ukkonen a obtenu en 2015 un Master of Fine Arts en peinture à la Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, où elle réside depuis une quinzaine d’années. Son travail puise dans des références artistiques variées, de Philip Guston à David Hockney, en passant par Matisse, Bosch et Ingres. Son style, immédiatement reconnaissable, se caractérise par des compositions dynamiques aux couleurs vibrantes, où se mêlent acrylique, aérosol, tempera et pastel. Elle s’attache à représenter la vie contemporaine sous un prisme déformé et ludique, où les émotions les plus profondes sont filtrées par une approche graphique forte et expressive. La tristesse, la solitude et l’ennui s’entrelacent avec l’humour et l’optimisme, révélant toute la complexité de l’expérience humaine.

Galerie LJ is pleased to present A Night In / A Day Out, the second solo exhibition within its walls by Swedish painter Heidi Ukkonen, who lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. Through a brand-new series of about ten paintings, she explores the banality of everyday life, transforming it into a theater of contrasting emotions, where the ordinary flirts with the extraordinary.
In her new works, Heidi Ukkonen stages fragments of domestic life—kitchen, living room, bedroom, garden—where characters and objects seem to be in suspension, caught in a temporal in-between. Boredom coexists with pure joy, the absurd intertwines with gentleness, creating an atmosphere that is both familiar and intriguing. Behind these images, tinged with humor and lightness, lies an underlying tension: what if there were no tomorrow? A Night In / A Day Out questions this oscillation between routine and the unexpected, between stillness and the urgency to live. Each scene becomes an invitation to savor the present moment, to capture the hidden beauty of the everyday—an echo of Carpe Diem: to embrace what is here before it fades away.
Originally from Sweden, Heidi Ukkonen earned a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 2015, where she has been residing for about fifteen years. Her work draws from a diverse range of artistic influences, from Philip Guston and David Hockney to Matisse, Bosch, and Ingres. Her distinctive style is characterized by dynamic compositions and vibrant colors, blending acrylic, spray paint, tempera, and pastel. She seeks to depict contemporary life through a distorted and playful lens, where deep emotions are filtered through a bold and expressive graphic approach. Sadness, loneliness, and boredom intertwine with humor and optimism, revealing the full complexity of human experience.
