La galerie est heureuse présente une nouvelle exposition personnelle de l’artiste américain d’origine chinoise Mu Pan. “Another Journey to the West” présente une dizaine de dessins originaux inédits, dans la continuité de ceux présentés en octobre 2022 sur la foire Asia Now, à Paris. Il s’agit des illustrations originales commandées pour une réédition du livre Journey to the West par Folio Society, paru le 14 mars 2023.
Equivalent asiatique de notre Seigneur des Anneaux occidental, Journey to the West (traduit en français: La Pérégrination vers l’ouest) est un roman épique médiéval signé de l’auteur chinois Wu Cheng’en, racontant les péripéties rocambolesques du Roi Singe. Accompagné d’une joyeuse bande atypique composée d’un moine, d’un dragon métamorphosé en cheval, d’un moine-cochon aux moeurs légères, et d’un soldat repenti, le Roi Singe entraine le lecteur dans les situations cocasses et les pièges qui rythment leur quête de textes bouddhistes sacrés, qu’ils doivent ramener d’Inde en Chine. Ce personnage clivant est au centre de l’histoire de Journey To The West, et son véritable héros. Singe à l’humour cynique, il devient à force de provocations et de batailles, pratiquement invincible. Monument de la littérature classique en Asie, le livre fait encore aujourd’hui l’objet de multiples adaptations sur écran et sur papier (dont le fameux animé japonais Dragon Ball). Il a influencé des générations de jeunes chinois (et au-delà), dont Mu Pan, qui se sont attachés au Roi Singe.
Pour la réédition du livre en anglais chez Folio Society, l’éditeur a commandé à Mu Pan un ensemble d’illustrations pour accompagner un large extrait du roman (initialement de 1000 pages). Il y reprend les scènes les plus iconiques des aventures du Roi Singe. Réalisés à l’encre sur papier, ces dessins offrent une palette différente des couleurs habituelles de l’artiste, et transposent ces scènes imaginées au XVIe siècle, en planches de bande-dessinées contemporaines. Donnant la part belle aux scènes de bataille dynamiques et aux compositions en mouvement inspirées des mangas, Mu Pan livre un fabuleux hommage au roman qui a marqué sa jeunesse et sa pratique artistique.

We are pleased to present a new solo exhibition by Chinese-American artist Mu Pan. “Another Journey to the West” showcases a new body of original drawings, following the ones presented in October 2022 at Asia Now art fair in Paris. These are the original illustrations commissioned for a new edition of the book Journey to the West by Folio Society (UK), released on March 14, 2023.
Journey to the West is a medieval epic novel by Chinese author Wu Cheng’en, recounting the incredible adventures of Monkey King. Accompanied by a merry band of monks, a dragon transformed into a horse, a promiscuous pig-monk, and a repentant soldier, Monkey King leads the reader through the comical situations and traps that punctuate their quest for sacred Buddhist texts, that they must bring back from India to China. This divisive character is at the center of the story of Journey To The West, and its true hero. A monkey with a cynical sense of humor, he becomes, by dint of provocations and battles, practically invincible.
A monument of classic literature in Asia, the book is still the subject of multiple adaptations on screen and in print (including the famous Japanese anime Dragon Ball). It has influenced generations of young Chinese people (and beyond), including Mu Pan, who all have become attached to Monkey King.
For the new publication of the book in English by Folio Society, the publisher commissioned Mu Pan to create a set of illustrations to accompany a large excerpt from the novel (counting originally 1000 pages). The illustrations include the most iconic scenes from the adventures of Monkey King. Created in ink on paper, these drawings offer a different palette from the usual colors of the artist, and transpose these scenes imagined in the 16th century, in contemporary comic strips. Giving a large space to dynamic battle scenes and compositions in motion inspired by manga, Mu Pan delivers a fabulous tribute to the novel that marked his youth and his artistic practice.
