Née en 1979 à Tbilisi en Géorgie, Rusudan Khizanishvili a étudié au Nikoladze College Of Art puis à la Tbilisi State Academy of Art, dont elle est diplômée depuis 2005. Elle vit et travaille dans sa ville natale. En 2015, elle a représenté la Géorgie à la 56e Biennale de Venise, aux côtés de cinq autres artistes. Ses peintures proposent un univers pictural singulier qui transcende la vérité de la religion sacrée et la réalité du monde séculier. Khizanishvili invite les spectateurs à traverser des portails à plusieurs niveaux d’interprétation, guidés par des personnages et créatures anthropomorphiques faisant le trait d’union entre les cultures, les nations, les époques et les identités.
Rusudan Khizanishvili puise une partie de son inspiration dans la culture traditionnelle géorgienne : iconographie chrétienne, histoire et folklore géorgien. Ayant grandi dans la Géorgie post-soviétique, sa mémoire est également empreinte de l’histoire troublée de cette région. Elle se sent tout aussi proche de l’école occidentale de peinture : le fauvisme parisien, Leipzig avec Neo Rauch et Rosa Loy, ou encore Adrian Ghenie, Paula Rego, Alice Neel… Elle cite également Louise Bourgeois, Nick Cave et Sarah Lucas comme des sources d’inspiration majeures dans son travail. Enfin, la présentation généralement théâtrale de ses personnages pourrait être un élément qui relie ses œuvres à la Géorgie, car le théâtre y est très présent. C’est donc à partir de toutes ces ressources que Rusudan Khizanishvili met en scène ses compositions et dépeint une réalité altérée par des éléments mystiques. C’est aussi pour renforcer une imagerie éthérée qu’elle ne s’impose aucune limite dans ses choix chromatiques : elle peint avec ses émotions, et les couleurs sont ses ondes cérébrales.
Ses peintures représentent des mondes oniriques, mystérieux et cachés, où prennent vie des créatures hybrides et chimériques lui permettant d’explorer les sujets de la mémoire culturelle, de l’exploration de soit, du corps de la femme ou encore des mythes. Des notions chères à l’artiste puisqu’elle les considère essentielles à la société pour que cette dernière puisse se comprendre, pour nous guider d’une manière subtile et archétypale. Elle s’intéresse également au concept de transhumanisme et à la recherche d’archétypes, en représentant des humains qui se transformant en une nouvelle espèce et qui, après résurrection, s’en vont, affamés par la réalité numérique, se réfugier dans des réserves naturelles.
Le rôle des femmes est également essentiel dans ses oeuvres, sans pour autant en faire une obsession. Sa conscience féministe vient probablement du fait d’avoir été élevée par une mère seule dans une société patriarcale, tandis que sa carrière artistique s’est développée en dépit des limites traditionnelles imposées aux femmes en Géorgie. S’inspirant des déesses gréco-romaines et de l’héritage de la Reine Tamar, à qui la Géorgie doit son âge d’or, les peintures de Rusudan Khizanishvili proposent un univers centré sur la figure féminine qui se développe autour de la notion de protection. La plupart de ses personnages féminins portent des costumes aux motifs ornementaux élaborés, semblables à ceux de personnages mythiques ou oniriques. Elle incorpore dans son travail des métaphores de la féminité (l’utérus, la femme et l’enfant) et utilise les armures et les insignes habillant ses personnages comme une protection symbolique de leurs attributs physiques, comme un talisman.

Born in 1979 in Tbilisi, Georgia, Rusudan Khizanishvili studied at the Nikoladze College of Art and later at the Tbilisi State Academy of Art, from which she graduated in 2005. She lives and works in her hometown. In 2015, she represented Georgia at the 56th Venice Biennale, alongside five other artists.
Her paintings present a unique pictorial universe that transcends the truth of sacred religion and the reality of the secular world. Khizanishvili invites viewers to pass through portals with multiple layers of interpretation, guided by anthropomorphic characters and creatures that bridge cultures, nations, eras, and identities.
Rusudan Khizanishvili draws part of her inspiration from traditional Georgian culture: Christian iconography, Georgian history, and folklore. Growing up in post-Soviet Georgia, her memory is also shaped by the troubled history of the region. She feels equally close to Western painting schools: Parisian Fauvism, Leipzig with Neo Rauch and Rosa Loy, or even Adrian Ghenie, Paula Rego, Alice Neel… She also cites Louise Bourgeois, Nick Cave, and Sarah Lucas as major influences in her work. Finally, the often-theatrical presentation of her characters might be a link between her work and Georgia, where theater plays a prominent role. It is from all these resources that Rusudan Khizanishvili stages her compositions and depicts a reality altered by mystical elements. To reinforce an ethereal imagery, she imposes no limits on her color choices: she paints with her emotions, and colors are her brainwaves.
Her paintings depict dreamlike, mysterious, and hidden worlds where hybrid and chimeric creatures come to life, allowing her to explore themes of cultural memory, self-exploration, the female body, and myths. These are notions dear to the artist, as she considers them essential for society to understand itself and to subtly and archetypically guide us. She is also interested in the concept of transhumanism and the search for archetypes, representing humans transforming into a new species who, after resurrection, retreat to nature reserves, hungry for reality after their experience in the digital realm.
The role of women is also essential in her work, though not an obsession. Her feminist consciousness likely stems from being raised by a single mother in a patriarchal society, while her artistic career developed despite the traditional limitations imposed on women in Georgia. Drawing inspiration from Greco-Roman goddesses and the legacy of Queen Tamar, to whom Georgia owes its golden age, Rusudan Khizanishvili’s paintings offer a universe centered around the feminine figure, developed through the notion of protection. Most of her female characters wear elaborately patterned costumes, resembling mythological or dreamlike figures. She incorporates metaphors of femininity (the womb, mother and child) in her work and uses the armor and insignia adorning her characters as a symbolic protection of their physical attributes, like a talisman.
