La Galerie LJ reçoit l’artiste américaine SWOON pour une nouvelle exposition personnelle en ses murs. SWOON choisit en 2018 d’abandonner la linogravure, jusqu’alors sa technique de prédilection depuis les 20 dernières années, au profit du dessin direct.
C’est à Paris qu’elle choisit de présenter pour la toute première fois une exposition entièrement consacrée à ses dessins et croquis, à la façon d’un « carnet de confinement » réalisé au cours de ces trois derniers mois, qu’elle a passés en isolation contrainte dans son appartement à Brooklyn, transformé pour l’occasion en atelier.
Prenant le temps de re-découvrir tout le matériel amassé depuis des années dans cet appartement où elle passe d’habitude si peu de temps, étant souvent en voyage pour ses projets artistiques ou humanitaires, SWOON a mis à profit cette période de confinement pour passer en revue des oeuvres anciennes, de vieilles idées, des projets en suspens. Elle les a revisité et ré-appréhendé de façon plus réfléchie, plus approfondie, plus profonde et plus lente qu’auparavant.
Dans ce contexte, elle a tenté de trouver un mot correspondant au fait de refaire quelque chose que l’on a déjà fait mais plus lentement, ou différemment. « The Slow Reprise », titre de cette nouvelle exposition personnelle, peut ainsi être interprété dans nos deux langues : lentement repriser, raccommoder en anglais, ou bien reprendre, lentement recommencer, en français. Un terme qui illustre parfaitement notre situation actuelle, après une crise sanitaire mondiale qui nous invite à la refonte de nos habitudes, à recommencer avec ce que l’on a déjà, mais différemment, comme une deuxième chance, pour refaire en mieux.
SWOON reprend ainsi tous ses carnets de croquis, tous ses dessins préparatoires qui n’ont pas abouti à une linogravure ces années passées, pour donner à cette galerie de portraits et de motifs une deuxième chance, différente, afin de redécouvrir ces gens rencontrés et dessinés au cours de ses multiples voyages et projets. L’exposition à la galerie recréera l’appartement-atelier de l’artiste, avec sa constellation de dessins accrochés directement aux murs.
Une grande exposition monographique a été consacrée à SWOON à Paris à l’été 2019 à Fluctuart, le centre d’art flottant sur la Seine. Elle a également présenté une exposition personnelle très remarquée cet hiver chez son galeriste new yorkais Jeffrey Deitch, montrant pour la 1ère fois ses recherches les plus récentes en animation stop motion.

Galerie LJ in Paris presents a new solo show by American artist SWOON, this summer. In 2018, SWOON decided to abandon linocut, her technique of choice for the last 20 years, in favor of direct drawing.
She chose to present in Paris, for the very first time, an exhibition entirely dedicated to her original drawings and sketches, in the manner of a «notebook of confinement» made over the past three months, that she spent in isolation in her apartment in Brooklyn, turned into a workshop for the occasion.
Taking the time to re-discover all the material gathered for years in this apartment where she usually spends so little time, often travelling for her artistic or humanitarian projects, SWOON took advantage of this period of confinement to go over old art, old ideas, old projects. She has been revisiting them and redoing some more thoughtfully, thoroughly, deeper and slower than previously.
In this context, she tried to find a word that would correspond to repeating something that had already been done, but more slowly, or differently. “The Slow Reprise”, the title of her new solo exhibition, can thus be interpreted in our two languages: “to reprise” slowly, “to mend” in English, or “to start over”, “to start again” slowly, in French. A term that perfectly illustrates our current situation, after a global health crisis that invites us to rethink our habits, to start again with what we already have, but differently, as a second chance, to do better.
SWOON thus takes up again all her sketchbooks, all her preparatory drawings that did not lead to a linocut print these past years, to give this gallery of portraits and patterns a second chance, different, in order to rediscover these people met and drawn during her many travels and projects.
“The Slow Reprise”, her new solo show at Galerie LJ, will recreate the artist’s studio apartment, with its constellation of drawings hanging directly from the walls.
A monographic exhibition was dedicated to SWOON in Paris in the summer of 2019 at Fluctuart, the floating art center on the Seine river. She also presented an acclaimed solo exhibition this past Winter at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in New York, showing for the first time her most recent researches in stop motion video animation.
