Brooklyn-based artist Swoon celebrates everyday people and explores social and environmental issues with her signature paper portraits and figurative installations. She is best known for her large, intricately-cut prints wheat pasted to industrial buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
For this exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, Swoon creates a site-specific installation in the rotunda gallery, transforming it into a fantastic landscape centering on a monumental sculptural tree with a constructed environment at its base, including sculpted boats and rafts, figurative prints and drawings, and cut paper foliage.
Often inspired by contemporary and historical events, Swoon engages with climate change in the installation as a response to the catastrophic Hurricane Sandy that struck the Atlantic Coast in 2012, and Doggerland, a landmass that once connected Great Britain and Europe and that was destroyed by a tsunami 8,000 years ago.

Le parcours de Stefano Monfeli dit Pane est indissociable de l’histoire du graffiti à Rome dans les années 90, qui a été publiée dans le livre Writing Metropolitano: Just Push The Button (éditions Alternativa-Nuovi Equilibri, 2002), dont il est l’auteur. Né à Rome en 1974, il arrête son cursus à l’Accademia di Belle Arti de Rome en 1996 et se consacre à la bande-dessinée et au graphisme.
Au cours des années 90 la culture hip hop devient une connection entre la majorité des jeunes gens créatifs de Rome, qui s’expriment ensemble à travers le rap, le break dance, la musique et le graffiti – comme partout en Europe et aux USA. Pane est impliqué dans ce mouvement culturel et c’est à cette époque qu’il commence à peindre à la bombe aérosol et à tagguer. Son expérience comme graffeur fut une étape importante dans son apprentissage artistique. Cette pratique lui a permis de participer à plusieurs expositions sur le graffiti en Italie et en Europe.
En 2000, les idées créatives d’un groupe d’amis donnent naissance au collectif Why Style dont Pane est co-fondateur. Depuis lors, le collectif a participé à un grand nombre d’expositions internationales, représentant l’une des premières identités collectives du panorama artistique italien. Le collectif  est toujours actif et est désormais basé, en outre de Rome, à Amsterdam.
En effet en 2004 Pane déménage à Amsterdam où il vit et travaille à présent, et son travail a pris deux directions : l’art, et le graphisme, qui parfois se mélangent. Plus particulièrement il produit des illustrations, des peintures, des installations et du design éditorial.
La première monographie sur Pane, People Think I’m Cool: The Art and Life of Pane en 2011, a été publiée chez Damiani et est soutenue par Stussy (pour qui il a réalisé de nombreux visuels de t-shirts).

Pane was born in Rome in 1974. In 1996, after attending the Accademia di Belle Arti of Rome, he stopped following school to continue his studies as an autodidact, especially as a cartoonist and graphic designer.
During the 90’s the hip-hop culture established a connection with most of the young creative generations of Rome, who would express themselves through rapping, break-dancing, dj-ing and graffiti, this cultural movement involved him into practicing aerosol art, most known as graffiti writing. His experience as a graffiti writer would be an important step in his growth as an artist; it is this activity that brought him to exhibit his work in several graffiti based art exhibitions in Italy and around Europe.
The story of graffiti in Rome has been celebrated with the book Just Push The Button-Writing Metropolitano (Stampa Alternativa-Nuovi Equilibri, 2002), of which Pane is the author.
In 2000 the creative ideas of a bunch of friends gave birth to the Why Style collective of which he is a cofounder, the collective’s purpose is to filter the urban subcultures into forms of art, exploring the concrete realities and phantasmagoria of contemporary urban life. Since then the Why Style collective attended several international exhibitions, representing one of the first collaborative realities of the Italian artistic panorama. The Why Style collective is still active, now based in Amsterdam and Rome.
In 2004 Pane moved to Amsterdam, where he still lives and works, and his work developed in two directions: art and graphic design, which sometimes melt together, more specifically his work embraces; illustration, painting, installations and editorial design.
